Burlingame Measure D

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Measure D?

Measure D would increase the existing hotel tax (legally known as the transient occupancy tax) by 3% in Burlingame. The tax would still only be paid by short-term, overnight visitors.

Measure D will provide locally controlled funding to maintain essential city services in Burlingame, protect public safety services and preserve the quality of life our residents deserve.

Voting YES on Measure D ensures that hotel guests help fund the services they use, so local homeowners and residents don’t bear the full cost.

Why do we need Measure D?

We live in Burlingame because it offers an exceptional quality of life and great local services. We take pride in our Police Department, parks, local businesses, and community programs for youth and seniors. However, the growing number of visitors who stay in our community has added pressure onto our streets, sidewalks, and public safety services.

These community spaces, streets, and sidewalks now require ongoing maintenance that is beyond current available resources.  If we don’t address these issues now, they will be more expensive to repair and maintain in the future.

Burlingame’s hotel tax rate is currently among the lowest in the County and has not been increased in more than 17 years.

Well-maintained streets, safe sidewalks, and clean parks protect Burlingame’s quality of life and help preserve property values.

What services will Measure D fund?

Measure D funding would be available for all city general government uses, including:

  • Repair and maintain streets, sidewalks, and potholes

  • Maintain parks and healthy trees on city streets

  • Strengthen emergency preparedness and public safety

  • Support recreation programs and facilities for youth and seniors

How will Measure D ensure accountability?

Measure D ensures our hotel guests pay their fair share for city services. The state and federal government cannot take one penny of Measure D. Independent citizens’ oversight and annual financial audits are required.

How much will Measure D cost?

If passed by local voters, Measure D will increase the existing hotel tax (legally known as transient occupancy tax) by 3% and would provide an estimated $5,700,000 annually to support general City services. Measure D does not increase taxes for local residents. The tax would still only be paid by short-term, overnight visitors.
